L'ALTRO MESTIERE. SCRITTORI ALLA PROVA DEL CINEMA: LARRY McMURTRY, EMMANUEL CARRERE, GUILLERMO ARRIAGA

According to Eugenio Montale, a writer's collaboration with the world of film is to be categorized under that set of professional employments definable as a “second profession.” In the twentieth century, however, there have been a great many novelists involved in writing films and, more recently, television series. By examining the work of three authors active from the 1960s to the present, exemplary for their engagement in both literary and film writing, this thesis sets out to revisit the Montalian notion of a “second profession.” The work of Larry McMurtry, Emmanuel Carrère, and Guillermo Arriaga shows the fruitful interactions between the two forms of writing by insisting particularly on three thematic areas: autobiographical writing, the use of montage, and the practice of rewriting and reworking influences.

Secondo Eugenio Montale, la collaborazione di uno scrittore con il mondo del cinema è da rubricare in quell'insieme di impieghi professionali definibili come un "secondo mestiere". Nel Novecento, tuttavia, sono stati moltissimi i romanzieri coinvolti nella scrittura di film e, più di recente, di serie televisive. Esaminando l'opera di tre autori attivi dagli anni Sessanta a oggi, esemplari per il loro impegno nel campo della scrittura letteraria e di quella cinematografica, questa tesi si propone di rivedere la nozione montaliana di "secondo mestiere". L'opera di Larry McMurtry, Emmanuel Carrère e Guillermo Arriaga mostra le proficue interazioni tra le due forme di scrittura insistendo in modo particolare su tre aree tematiche: la scrittura autobiografica, l'uso del montaggio, la pratica di riscrittura e rielaborazione delle influenze.
