This paper presents the results of our historical investigation of the treatment of idioms in several Franco-Italian bilingual dictionaries. We begin with the first bilingual dictionaries (Fenice 1584 ; Canal 1611): in spite of their small size, we do have some phraseology, but no other information about the entry such as pronunciation and grammatical information. When we look up for an idiom in the first dictionaries we find that we do not have any order after the entry, as each one is presented in a new paragraph. We find this kind of microstructure in Franco-Italian bilingual lexicography of the 17th century and within most of the 18th century dictionaries (Oudin 1640a ; Duez 1662 ; Veneroni 1681). Finally, we analyse the dictionaries of Abbot François d’Alberti de Villeneuve. These dictionaries introduce a new compact microstructure within a single paragraph, much alike our modern dictionaries, and idioms are sorted based on the different meanings of the entry.
