This book aims at anylizing the so called “diarchia”, a peculiar political and institutional phenomenon experienced by the italian constitutional monarchy throughout the Fascist period (1922-1943). As it is generally known, the term “diarchia” refers to the contemporary presence of a Head of State and a Chief Executive who, for a certain spare of time, ended up to share both similar symbolic role and powers. Based on numerous primary sources of various kind, this book looks particularly at the Crown’s role toward the fascists institutions – with regard to the National Fascist Party, the militia, the Great Council, the corporations and, las but not least, the Duce itself – and tells the story of the formation of a “fascist monarchy”. On this respect, this work undertakes a different and innovative path from the bulk of the contemporary literature on the fascist period and its institution, in that it is mainly concerned with the King rather than the Duce. For this reason the narrative is mainly concerned with all the institutional skirmishes and agreements between the fascist and the monarchic institutions, and builds not just upon official sources, but also upon the reconstruction of symbols, rituals and public appearances of both the King Vittorio Emanuele III and the Prime Minister Mussolini. The result is a delicate and well balanced analysis in which, at the end, it is really difficult to argue whether was the monarchy to take advantage of the fascist institutions or it was all the other way around.
