The paper considers becoming grandparents as a change of existential type, with specific impacts on personal identity. Like every major family event, even the arrival of a grandson disrupts the previous balance and sets new developmental tasks. Following the results of a qualitative research conducted with a small sample of grandparents, the paper presents the new educational needs associated with the process of access to the status of grandparents, also in relation to the new conditions of old age in current historical context and culture.

Abstract

The paper considers becoming grandparents as a change of existential type, with specific impacts on personal identity. Like every major family event, even the arrival of a grandson disrupts the previous balance and sets new developmental tasks. Following the results of a qualitative research conducted with a small sample of grandparents, the paper presents the new educational needs associated with the process of access to the status of grandparents, also in relation to the new conditions of old age in current historical context and culture.
