From the rich documentation preserved in the Historical Archive of the Institute Trivulzio of Milan, and related to the personal files of orphans and orphan Milan since 1800, and up to the sixties of the twentieth century, the article focuses on some family types, within which you can capture the peculiarities of the roles (father and mother), the relationship between the composition and abundance of poverty, the relationship between poverty and premature death of the father or mother, and a number of other variables that characterized the families of widows and widowers over a long period between the first and second half of the nineteenth century, at the turn of the process of national unification.

A partire dalla ricca documentazione conservata presso l'Archivio Storico Dell'Istituto Trivulzio di Milano, e relativi ai fascicoli personali di orfani e orfane milanesi a partire dal 1800, e fino a tutti gli anni Sessanta del XX secolo, l'articolo mette a fuoco alcune tipologie famigliari, all'interno delle quali si possono cogliere la peculiarità dei ruoli (padre e madre), il rapporto tra numerosità della composizione e stato di povertà, il rapporto tra povertà e premorienza del padre o della madre, ed una serie di altre variabili che hanno caratterizzato le famiglie di vedovi e di vedove in un lungo periodo tra prima e seconda metà del XIX secolo, a cavallo del processo di unificazione nazionale.
