Individualità e rappresentazione

The essay shows how traditionally, in the West, the notions of individuality and rationality have always been related to the basic one of living and conscious subjectivity. Such concept is so fundamental that it has remained undetermined for a long time: it is almost indefinable, as it precedes any other fundamental category. In fact, representation should not be conceived as a mere result of the unifying activity of a transcendental subject who experiences reality. It should be seen as the actual place where a subject is constituted, on the bases of something which has always been present, hence precedent. In other words, knowledge and life presuppose representation. At the bottom of representation hides the irrepresentable: the totality of life and its affections, which is something that precedes and constitutes consciousness.

Il saggio mostra come le nozioni di individualità e di razionalità siano tradizionalmente dipendenti, in Occidente, dal concetto di rappresentazione, quest’ultima considerata quale operazione basilare della soggettività vivente e conoscente. Si tratta di un concetto talmente fondamentale da essere rimasto a lungo indeterminato: la sua precedenza rispetto ad altre categorie fondamentali lo ha infatti reso sostanzialmente indefinibile. La rappresentazione non sarebbe infatti tanto da intendere come il risultato dell’opera unificatrice di un soggetto trascendentale nel suo atto di fare esperienza, quanto come il luogo in cui il soggetto stesso è costituito sulla base di qualcosa che è già là e che dunque sempre lo precede. La conoscenza e la vita stessa presuppongono insomma la rappresentazione, al cui fondo agisce l’irrappresentabile, che è poi la totalità della vita e delle sua affezioni. Qualcosa dunque di precedente e costitutivo rispetto alla coscienza.
