Le costituzioni della Biblioteca Ambrosiana e la «condizione dei tempi»

Considering Federico Borromeo's great project today means first of all questioning its founding issues. A centuries-old historiography has punctually responded to the same inquiry, starting each time from its own horizon of expectation. The essay therefore tries to observe with which perspectives the Ambrosiana has been framed over the different centuries, to critically introduce the current renewal of studies. The rediscovery of two important writings by Federico Borromeo, fully appreciated only recently, was significant for the more exact knowledge of the Milanese institutions: the ambitious De absoluta Collegi Ambrosiani institutione in litteris, with its sixteen programmatic books, highlights the encyclopedia of knowledge and the method to be used by the Doctors of Collegio Ambrosiano; the brief and rhetorical Salomon sive opus regium, which demonstrates a fact now shared, namely that the much desired renewal of studies should also have contemplated the pure sciences, for the knowledge of nature.

Considerare oggi il grande progetto federiciano significa innanzitutto interpellarne le istanze fondative. Una secolare storiografia ha puntualmente risposto alla medesima inchiesta, a partire cioè ogni volta dal proprio orizzonte d’attesa. Il saggio prova dunque a osservare con quali prospettive e come nei diversi secoli l’Ambrosiana è stata inquadrata, per introdurre criticamente all’attuale rinnovamento degli studi. Il recupero di due importanti scritti di Federico Borromeo, pienamente apprezzati solo di recente, è stato significativo per la più esatta conoscenza delle istituzioni milanesi: l’ambizioso De absoluta Collegi Ambrosiani institutione in litteris che, con i suoi sedici libri programmatici, squaderna l’enciclopedia dei saperi e il metodo da adoperarsi da parte dei Dottori del Collegio Ambrosiano; il breve e retorico Salomon sive opus regium, che dimostra un dato ormai condiviso, ossia che il tanto desiderato rinnovamento degli studi avrebbe dovuto contemplare anche le scienze esatte, per la conoscenza della natura.
