This is the introduction which summarizes the main subjects of interest of the volume: the centrality of the theme of Christ’s cross in Christian religion, and the development of this theme in the centuries. The main phases of its history were: the pathetic and realistic turning point in late Middle Ages, the bloom after the Council of Trent and in Baroque age, and the later contributions between the end of the Ancien Régime and the 19th and 20th centuries.
Introduzione al volume che ne sintetizza i motivi maggiori di interesse: centralità del riferimento al tema della croce di Cristo nel sistema religioso cristiano, suo sviluppo nel tempo segnato dalla svolta in senso patetico-realista del tardo Medioevo, dalla fioritura tridentina e barocca e dai successivi apporti maturati tra fine dell'Antico Regime e Otto-Novecento.
