The idea of "postmodernity" needs the concept of "modernity". The essay explores various definitions of modernity and asks if that age, typical of wealthy societies, could be used in Central America, where modernity came only to a powerful and minority sector. After explaining what a group of French thinkers call "post-modernism", i.e., the dissolution of modern order, the problem of Central America arises: where there was no "modernity", can one speak of "post-modernity”? Are the superficial manifestations of that movement enough to allow for the application of European categories to our cultural realities?

Abstract
The idea of "postmodernity" needs the concept of "modernity". The essay explores various definitions of modernity and asks if that age, typical of wealthy societies, could be used in Central America, where modernity came only to a powerful and minority sector. After explaining what a group of French thinkers call "post-modernism", i.e., the dissolution of modern order, the problem of Central America arises: where there was no "modernity", can one speak of "post-modernity”? Are the superficial manifestations of that movement enough to allow for the application of European categories to our cultural realities?I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
