The investigations of Christian archaeology over the last thirty years in Lombardy have contributed to a great deal of knowledge about early Christian Milan and other ancient cities in the region as a result of new excavations, but also thanks to the reconsideration of material from older investigations. There has also been much activity in the rural area with the recognition of many early Christian and early medieval cult buildings.
