The machine tools industry has a leading role in the Italian manufacturing system. This crucial industrial branch has an innovation intensity higher than that of many other industrial branches. The paper investigates how the innovation and R&D undertaken by these firms affect their productivity. We built a significant sample through a question- naire based on the CIS (Community Innovation Survey). Also a regional geographic dimension is used to test the presence of specific local effects. The results show a posi- tive and strong contribution by human capital to productivity.

Abstract
The machine tools industry has a leading role in the Italian manufacturing system. This crucial industrial branch has an innovation intensity higher than that of many other industrial branches. The paper investigates how the innovation and R&D undertaken by these firms affect their productivity. We built a significant sample through a question- naire based on the CIS (Community Innovation Survey). Also a regional geographic dimension is used to test the presence of specific local effects. The results show a posi- tive and strong contribution by human capital to productivity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
