You must not consider the others at a later time when you have already discovered on your own what good is. The sense of something else instead has come into the concept since the beginning and in a constituent way, because good asks questions and moves from the way you are. Without realising anything different from yourself, for the way you are, neither good nor duty can rise. It is not even a question of individuals or community. Wherever it is shown the claim to be completely in line with yourself, to put yourself at the centre, the call for good moves away. Good comes out, goes beyond, starts along with difference and forces to face the other from self. There are ages that seem to be more sensitive to what binds together, to the universal, and other ages aiming at diversities. But the effort of thinking and saying about good always puts forward, on both sides, even in the upsettings, the dialectic tension between common and difference, between universal and particular. In spite of own peculiarities, this can be applied in the same way for classicality (Platonism, Aristotelianism, Thomism), for subjectivity age (Kierkegaard, Sartre, Postmodern), for the debate on altruism (Solidarity). Good brings somebody together but does not wipe out. Good makes the difference but does not isolate. It takes beyond self but refuses every human synthesis. By keeping distant from convenient clichés, through three articulate movements (Archaeology, Existence, Sharing) it is possible to give back on a theoretical and hermeneutical way, the tense structure of good towards the other from self. Abstract

RIVA F 2012, Il bene e gli altri. Differenza, Universale, Solidarietà, Vita e Pensiero, 260 pp. We are so accustomed to looking at the world and the others just having ourselves as a reference point that we don’t even realize what good is.
