This essay introduces a collection of contributions (edited by the Author) about different aspects of women condition and of women’s relationship with the labour market. It focuses the attention on the process of feminization of the labour market, but also on the fact that the labour market is a “gendered institution” that assigns different roles and opportunities to men and women. Besides, it identifies the family and the welfare system as crucial factors in determining women’s behaviours and life chances, wishing a society in which gender will matter less.
