In 2015, Italian foreign policy focused on some topics connected to the largely failed attempt to improve Italy’s international reputation: the Libyan question, the migrant crisis, and the position of Italy in, and its relation with, the European Union (EU). Concerning the first two issues, Matteo Renzi’s government, like its predecessors, has focused on “Europeanizing” them so that Italy will not be “left alone” in confronting them. The third issue has been hurt in part by the attempt to improve Italy’s image. It has also been the arena in which the prime minister sought to gain some budgetary flexibility with respect to the constraints imposed by the European Commission.
