Abstract

The entry in the encyclopedic dictionary Iconography and Christian art starts from the debate on the extension of the contemporaneity and the recognition of its features to go on then in the main topic. From the strong spiritualist motivation which is expressed by the birth of abstract art, recalling to Symbolist we move to another very interesting consonance, those between artistic and spiritual research in the work of Matisse, Brancusi, Picasso and Rouault up to the affirmation of cubism and of its theorization. After the First World War are significant some interventions by A. Martini, the elaboration defined by J. Maritain’s publication “Art and Scolastique”, as well as the thought of R. Guardini that leads Rhotenfels cultural experience starting the liturgical renewal and the architectural experiences connected that will lead to the Second Vatican Council. Then it is observed the action of the magazines "The art of Eglise" and "L'Art Sacré," the war period expressed in the representation of the cross (Chagall, Sitherland, Bacon, Guttuso, Manzù, Sassu, Cagli, etc.). and the reconstruction approached by the action of archbishops such as Lercaro and Montini, then the action of religious orders such as the Dominicans, the Franciscans, the Passionists who become promoters of a new dialogue with the artists up to very recent proposals. The entry also reports the ecclesial documents that accompany the new awareness of the relationship between Art and Church and the reference bibliography.
