The contribution, within the monograph on Giorgio Mascherpa, highlights his role as "militant critic" exercised on the pages of the newspaper "L'Avvenire", as well as in many other writings and exhibition initiatives, artistic direction and cataloging, faced and carried out in the second half of the twentieth century. The period of his cultural action was of intense excitement and reforms both on the side of the Church with the Second Vatican Council, and on the side of Art. In the arts in fact was born a deep contraposition between figuration and abstraction, an hard discussion on the social function of the artist, on the interdisciplinary tension of languages, a self-regulatory folding that is little concerned to achieve the participation of the observer. In this context, Mascherpa critical path has great importance because it opens passages in contemporary culture so bridled in clichés and highly ideological. From there Born the re-evaluation of many famous artists, revealed in never faced paths on the wake of the criticism already taken by Edoardo Persico and a field work aimed at a real rapprochement between the artists and the Church, already promoted by the action of Pope Paul VI and realized through exhibitions, catalogs, collections, in a continuous availability to dialogue and in close proximity to the artists.

Il contributo, all’interno della monografia dedicata a Giorgio Mascherpa, mette in luce il suo ruolodi “critico militante” esercitato sulle pagine del quotidiano “L’Avvenire”, così come in molti altri scritti e iniziative espositive, di direzione artistica e di catalogazione, affrontati e svolti nella seconda metà del Novecento. Periodo, quello della sua azione culturale, che fu d’intenso fermento e riforma, sia sul versante ecclesiale con il Concilio Vaticano II, che sul versante dell’arte. Nasce infatti in campo artistico una profonda contrapposizione tra figurazione e astrazione, una difficile riflessione sulla funzione sociale dell’artista, sulla tensione interdisciplinare dei linguaggi, un ripiegamento autodisciplinare che poco si preoccupa di raggiungere la partecipazione dell’osservatore. In tale contesto il percorso critico di Mascherpa ha un rilievo di grande spessore nell’aprire varchi nella cultura contemporanea così imbrigliata in luoghi comuni e fortemente ideologizzata. Nascono una rinnovata valutazione di molti artisti celebri, disvelati in percorsi mai affrontati, sulla scia dell’azione critica già intrapresa da Edoardo Persico e un lavoro sul campo volto a un concreto riavvicinamento fra artisti e Chiesa, promosso già dall’azione di papa Paolo VI e realizzato attraverso mostre, cataloghi, formazione di collezioni, in una continua disponibilità al dialogo e in stretta vicinanza con gli artisti.
