Pest control in orchards managed according to organic farming principles is done with different natural products (EC Reg. 2092/91). Until now there is a lack in research on the efficacy and side effects of these products. Italian Ministry of Agriculture (MiPAF) is promoting research on this field in order to regulate the use of natural pesticides. The following products have been tested in 1999-2001: azadirachtin and quassia against Myzus persicae on peach; azadirachtin and ryanodine against Cydia molesta on peach. In the M. persicae trials, quassia showed a weak activity on secondary colonies and azadirachtin seems to provide some protection if applied before infestation. As to C. molesta, ryanodine and azadirachtin seem to provide some protection but no clear-cut effect has been recorded. The evaluation of the efficacy of natural products must take into account: 1) standardization of the product (qualitative and quantitative characterization of active ingredients); 2) overall orchard management, that can reduce the need for a high insecticide activity; 3) application criteria can be considerably different from IPM with chemical products.
