The paper explores the history of optics in the wider context of the history of science of the XVII century, pointing out the different conceptions of light at the rise of modern science, which will be at the roots of many literary and artistic successive works. The idea of light in Kepler, Descartes, Huygens, Hobbes, Newton and in other authors are analyses and compared.
