The article reconstructs the history of academic theatre teaching and the development of the discipline of theatre history at the Catholic University of Milan from 1955 to the present. It examines the figure of Mario Apollonio and the foundation of the discipline, with his theory on the chorus as an essential element of the theatrical experience. It then reconstructs the development of the line of theatre history studies promoted by Annamaria Cascetta and the development of research and educational activities in social theatre, beginning with the teachings of Sisto Dalla Palma and then Claudio Bernardi.
