The Mediterranean: Sea of identities

The Mediterranean Sea represents a complex cultural space where identities are dynamically formed through historical interactions, cultural exchanges, and dialogues between diverse civilizations. This paper explores the concept of Mediterranean identity through Egyptian intellectual thought, particularly examining the works of thinkers like Taha Husayn, who viewed the Mediterranean as a multilateral cultural relationship transcending political and religious boundaries. Drawing on Islamic philosophical traditions, the study argues that difference is not a source of conflict but a natural, divine-ordained principle of human existence. By analyzing the Mediterranean as a historical and cultural bridge, the research challenges binary distinctions between East and West, emphasizing pluralism, mutual understanding, and the transformative potential of cultural dialogue.
