Water has always been considered not only an element of identity and spirituality but also an indispensable condition for settlement and survival. Water is a source of life for the villages and tribes that live here, the lack of which undoubtedly endangers the survival of entire populations. Today, water insecurity due to climate change is mainly due to the depletion of countless natural sources of fresh water. Water, therefore, becomes the focus of numerous international protection and cooperation programmes, but above all the cause of deadly conflicts and a major driver of inter-regional migration phenomena. Orienting contemporary economies towards ecological and social reconversion is an honest commitment towards future generations and our planet. While investments in the management of water resources and the creation of new infrastructures could guarantee widespread and capillary access to water with positive spin-offs, there is certainly no shortage of tensions, as is happening with the project to build a new dam in the Upper Nile region of Ethiopia. Water is therefore today at the centre of questions of governance and geopolitics.
