This volume reports the results of a research activity carried out in Italy within the framework of the international project Migrants’ Associations and Philippine Institutions for Development (MAPID), supported by the EU programme Aeneas, and headed by the Scalabrini Migration Center of Manila. This project was aimed at strengthening, through activities of research, training and dissemination conducted in the Philippines, Italy and Spain, the collaboration between the Filipino diaspora and the Philippine institutions for the development of the sending country. The study, carried out in Italy, and in particular in the areas of Milan and Rome, where the largest Filipino communities are located, was based on a mixed methodology combining quantitative and qualitative analysis: 200 questionnaires to Filipino migrants, 25 in-depth interviews with key informants, and 40 semi-structured interviews with Filipino associations’ leaders form the basis for the information provided. The main focus of the research work is on the integration conditions, the transnational practices, the associational life and the tendency towards co-development of the Filipino community settled in Italy. The first part of the volume contains a review of the literature concerning the immigration portrait in Italy and, in particular, the Filipino community. Attention is also focussed on data collected concerning several aspects of the Filipino migrants’ conditions of life. The second part of the volume contains a detailed description of the features of the Filipino associations and religious communities. In the third part, some indications are provided about how to empower Filipino migrants and the role of their associations as agents of development both in the receiving and in the sending countries, mostly through targeted training programmes.
