"O Italiani, io vi esorto alle storie". La storia patria nella letteratura del Risorgimento

The Risorgimento Literature invokes the aid of historical memories to politically reawaken the Country, since facts and their protagonists were thought to be the most fit to rouse people’s spirits to the excellence of virtues and the force of civil actions. Therefore literature sets itself as an essential mediator between history and politics, that is between the past and the future of Italy, on the one hand by cultivating the heroic myth of the “virtù prisca” (Alfieri) and of the “egregie cose” (Foscolo), on the other by condemning the evil effects of the civil conflicts which had surrendered the Peninsula to foreign rule (Manzoni, Cantù, Guerrazzi). From this perspective, the present essay dwells on the exemplary event of the Lega Lombarda, culminated in the successful battle of Legnano, interpreted from a national point of view.

Per promuovere il risveglio politico del Paese, la letteratura del Risorgimento invoca il soccorso delle memorie storiche, ravvisando nel repertorio dei fatti e dei loro protagonisti la materia più idonea a infiammare gli animi degli italiani all'eccellenza delle virtù e alla forza delle pasisoni civili. La letteratura si candida, perciò, al ruolo di indispensabile mediatrice tra la storia e la politica, ovvero tra il passato e il futuro d'Italia, da un lato coltivando il mito eroico della "virtù prisca" (Alfieri) e delle "egregie cose" (Foscolo), dall'altro stigmatizzando gli effetti nefasti delle discordie civili che avevano consegnato la Penisola alle dominazioni straniere (Manzoni, Cantù, Guerrazzi). In questa prospettiva, il saggio si sofferma tra l'altro sulla vicenda esemplare della Lega Lombarda, culminata nella vittoriosa battaglia di Legnano, riletta in chiave nazionale (Berchet, Mamiani, Verdi, Carducci).
