The Italian reception of The Kolyma Tales The paper analyses the Italian reception of Varlam Shalamov’s masterpiece, The Kolyma Tales. It traces its publishing history through the critical debate in the press, particularly from Piero Sinatti’s translation in 1976, to the first complete Einaudi edition in 1999. Initially ignored by the left-wing Italian intellectuals, Shalamov started to enter the Italian literary panorama only in the new political climate of the 1990s and since then he has continued to question readers, in a dialogue that has involved the voices of Primo Levi and Gustaw Herling, and that is symptomatic of the complexity of Shalamov’s work.

Abstract
The Italian reception of The Kolyma Tales The paper analyses the Italian reception of Varlam Shalamov’s masterpiece, The Kolyma Tales. It traces its publishing history through the critical debate in the press, particularly from Piero Sinatti’s translation in 1976, to the first complete Einaudi edition in 1999. Initially ignored by the left-wing Italian intellectuals, Shalamov started to enter the Italian literary panorama only in the new political climate of the 1990s and since then he has continued to question readers, in a dialogue that has involved the voices of Primo Levi and Gustaw Herling, and that is symptomatic of the complexity of Shalamov’s work.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
