The paper discusses new formal analyses and semantic interpretations for two Old Norse names of the Earth‑goddess, Fjǫrgyn and Hlóðyn, providing further evidence that the Proto‑Germanic suffix *‑u‑njō‑ (Old Norse ‑yn) was created by re‑analysis from a suffix occurring in Proto‑Indo‑European devī́‑ formations and that its spread within Germanic may have been connected with analogical processes triggered by semantic association. Fjǫrgyn is thus traced back to an inherited derivative of the root *perḱ‑ ‘to be colourful, spotted, dark’ (matching the widespread collocation [dark – earth]) with parallels in Germanic, Indo‑Iranian and, possibly, Celtic, whereas Hlóðyn is analyzed as the outcome of an analogical formation of more recent origin, reflecting, however, the very ancient conception of the Earth as the “bearer” of the cosmos.
