This paper deals with the citational practices that are characte- ristic of Hélène Cixous’ fiction Manhattan. Lettres de la préhistoire. The examples presented here include fragments of literary texts and snatches of conversations heard by the narrator within her family: both of them are analyzed within the theoretical framework of inter- textuality and autonymy. This approach allows us to underline on the one hand the author’s subversive use of quotation, and on the other the polyphonic and open nature of the cixousian text and self. The latter is never single, but haunted by other people, characters and voices which are not only assimilated but also celebrated by Cixous.
