« Come navigare tra Scilla e Cariddi». Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours, moglie, madre e reggente

The essay reflects on 'female' sovereignty through the complex political biography of Maria Giovanna Battista of Savoy-Nemours. In recent decades, the topic of women in power has enjoyed the growing interest of scholars from all over Europe. There are many new historiographical challenges that these studies have put in place: first of all the attempt to reconstruct a genealogy of female power on a European level, which can also enjoy the renewed interest in the figure of Maria Giovanna Battista Savoia- Nemours. Secondly, the invitation to look at the history of women and gender history from multiple narrative perspectives that take into account the diversity of historical and geopolitical contexts.

Il mio contributo intende sviluppare qualche riflessione sulla sovranità ‘al femminile’ attraverso la complessa biografia politica di Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours. Negli ultimi decenni il tema delle donne di potere in senso lato ha goduto dell’interesse crescente degli studiosi di tutta Europa e numerose sono le nuove sfide storiografiche che tale mole di studi ha messo in campo: in primis il tentativo di ricostruire una genealogia del potere al femminile di livello europeo, di cui può godere anche il rinnovato interesse per la figura di Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours e, in seconda istanza, l’invito a guardare alla storia delle donne e alla storia di genere da molteplici prospettive narrative che tengano conto della diversitàdei contesti storici e geopolitici.
