This article is a biographical and mythical reading of Hombres de maíz. It looks at known facts and obscure facts of the author’s life in order to culminate in a mythical reading of the work. The study puts forward a reading of the “tecunas” of the text as part of the major myth of Gaspar Ilom, whom, according to Asturias, is a necessary point of reference for the reconstruction of the Guatemalan nation.
