Epigrafia e città tra la tarda antichità e l'alto medioevo

The role of epigraphy between late Antiquity and early Middle Age decreases in drastic way. In the ancient town writings were shown everywhere and, with different functions, were in public and private spaces; in early Middle Age they become rarer and survive mainly in churches. However, the most important functions exerted by ancient forms of communication on durable material add up to the epigraphy of that time: in particular epitaphs become full of different meanings that are over the necessity of communicating the memories of the dead. Religious, political, ideological, narrative and commemorative messages mix up in epitaphs. Il ruolo dell’epigrafia tra tarda antichità e alto medioevo tende a ridursi drasticamente; se nella città antica le scritture esposte erano presenti ovunque e interessavano con funzioni diversificate spazi pubblici e privati, nell’altomedioevo non solo si fanno più rare, ma sopravvivono soprattutto entro le chiese. Tuttavia spesso nell’epigrafia di quest’epoca si sommano le principali funzioni esercitate dalla pubblicistica antica su materiale durevole. Gli epitaffi in particolare si caricano spesso di valenze polisemiche che vanno ben oltre l’esigenza di trasmettere la memoria del defunto; in essi si mescolano messaggi religiosi, ideologici, politici, celebrativi, narrativi. Il contributo presentando un’ampia rassegna di esempi, approfondisce il ruolo che il testo esposto giocava ancora nello spazio urbano, su come venisse percepito e sui significati che gli venivano assegnati.
