Prisons ashould increasingly be regarded as physical and mental places in which fundamental issues are at stak, so relevant for societies and institutions, vigorously called upon to take care of their freedoms through a participatory and expert attention aimed at the condition of those who are deprived of them "by law" . Just the kind of attention this manual aims at exercising and eliciting fostering a new and penetrating look at the penitentiary question, both for the multidisciplinary angle offered by scholars of different scientific and professional sensitivities and skills, and for the critical-perspective analysis of the matter that unfolds there: while taking note of the undoubted advances in recent decades on the path of humanization and the re-educational purpose of the criminal punishment, the view embraces the path still to be taken (e.g. in the discipline of alternative measures with the elimination of foreclosures and automatisms, of restorative justice and of the treatment of the mentally ill ...). Therefore, trajectories are drawn that are also pushed beyond the existing legislation, not only in view of further reforms, but to offer mobile, complex and stimulating interpretations, up to the needs of understanding that penitentiary matters increasingly demand from everyone, yes from everyone belonging to the human kind.
