The volume collects nine contributions on the historical, political and social framework of theater in Rome in the first century BC reconstructing a framework thank to references to the previous and subsequent centuries and an interdisciplinary method. Each contribution uses a different disciplinary approach: archaeology, history of theatrical architecture, history of literature, philology, history of performative arts and genres, political history of Rome during the civil wars and the beginning of the Principate, history of Roman culture between conservatism and innovation. An Introduction presents a synthetic framework, more complete than those already available on Roman theatre of this age.

Il volume raccoglie nove contributi sul quadro storico, politico e sociale del teatro a Roma nel I sec. a.C. ricostruibile solo con riferimenti al secolo precedente e a quello successivo e attraverso un metodo interdisciplinare. I contributi del volume affrontano le criticità di ricostruzione dei generi drammatici (vecchi e nuovi), delle personalità dei poeti e dei loro testi di cui si hanno solo testimonianze indirette e frammentarie, delle strutture architettoniche dei teatri, il significativo ruolo di alcuni attori e il coinvolgimento del pubblico. Una Premessa offre il quadro di sintesi ricostruibile attraverso i dettagli dei singoli contributi.
