The First Algebra Printed in English: The Whetstone of Witte (1557) of Robert Recorde

This volume investigates Robert Recorde's (1510ca.-1558) contribution to the origin and historical development of the English vocabulary of mathematical science in Tudor England. Special attention is given to his treatise "The Whetstone of Witte" (1557), which was the first competent introduction to algebra printed in the English language. While analysing Recorde's attitudes to mathematical terms in English, a language which had no vernacular tradition in that subject, this study also tries to bring to light the extent to which this Tudor "Scientist" (Kaplan 1960) was able to "bridge the gap between the university and the craftsman through his skillful use of the vernacular" (Kaplan 1960: 180) and to assess whether the direction, the intent and the language of his science can only be accounted for by his time. The data for this study originate from the scrutiny of all Recorde's works and the scrutiny of the Latin and vernacular works of the Ancient, Medieval, and Contemporary sources that had been in use among continental mathematicians for a long time.

Il presente volume ricostruisce l'attività onomaturgica di Robert Recorde (1510ca.-1558), primo "Tudor Scientist", nel campo delle scienze matematiche nell'Inghilterra del periodo Tudor. Il volume si concentra in particolare sull'analisi del trattato "The Whetstone of Witte" (1557), prima opera di algebra a stampa direttamente in lingua inglese. L'attività onomaturgica di Recorde è ancora più interessante se si considera che la lingua inglese non aveva affatto alcuna tradizione in lingua vernacola nel campo dell'algebra. L'analisi è stata condotta secondo un criterio storico-culturale oltre che linguistico: si vuole infatti evidenziare la massiccia missione divulgatrice di questo Tudor Scientist, il quale mette le conoscenze dell'epoca nel campo delle scienze matematiche a disposizione dell'intero popolo inglese, utilizzando la lingua vernacola. La scelta del vernacolo comincia a delinearsi come alternativa e come scelta marcata al latino, accorciando così il divario tra la tradizione universitaria e la pratica della mercatura, con un preciso intento didattico. I dati per il presente studio derivano dall'analisi delle opere di Recorde, unitamente all'analisi della produzione matematica dell'Occidente latino e nelle varie tradizioni in volgare che costituiscono i presupposti culturali della letteratura "scientifica" e non del Cinquecento europeo.
