The transition to adulthood has always been characterized by challenges and opportunities. For Millennials, this transition has become even more complex than in the past. In the dramatic 2020s, what configurations has the well-being of young people taken? What level of wellbeing do young women and young men have? Does it differ between the two? Young women were experiencing the greatest struggles even before of the pandemic, reporting less self-esteem, the need for family-work balance along with the two well-known phenomena of the glass ceiling and the sticky floor. The results that emerged from the analysis of the data show a surprisingly clear picture: on most of the variables considered as indicators of wellbeing, young men report significantly higher scores than young women. Moreover, it seems that the gender variable overcome all the other structural variables, such as geographical location, employment status and educational level.
La transizione all’età adulta è da sempre caratterizzata dalla presenza di sfide e opportunità. Per i Millennials questa transizione è diventata ancora più complessa che in passato. Nel drammatico 2020, quali configurazioni ha assunto il benessere dei giovani? Giovani donne e giovani uomini mostrano livelli uguali o diversi di benessere? Già prima della pandemia erano le giovani donne a riscontrare maggiori fatiche: minor livelli di autostima, necessità di conciliazione famiglia-lavoro, e presenza dei due noti fenomeni come glass celiling (soffitto di cristallo) e sticky floor (pavimento di pece). I risultati emersi dalle analisi dei dati mostrano un quadro sorprendentemente chiaro: sulla gran parte delle variabili considerate come indicatori di benessere i giovani uomini riportano punteggi significativamente maggiori rispetto alle loro coetanee. Inoltre, sembra che la variabile genere riesca a sovrastare tutte le altre variabili strutturali, quali la collocazione geografica, la condizione lavorativa e il titolo di studio.
