Memorie d’infanzia: sguardi sul mondo nelle testimonianze dei bambini di Jella Lepman

From the late nineteenth century, childhood has been the center of theories and research in different fields of knowledge. After many studies and in-depth analysis on and for children, the twentieth century showed the possibility of examining and hearing the voices and sensing the footsteps of children, rarely considered before due to the labile and hybrid nature of the sources, often marked by the adult's hand (Gecchele, Polenghi, Dal Toso, 2017). The challenge of analyzing and studying children's experiences in history is recent and highly articulated (Becchi, 1994, 1999, 2010; Fava, 2015): "children's writings" offer us a broad overview where childhood becomes the key to understanding the transformations of society, its mentality, its convictions, and its attitude towards the future (Antonelli, Becchi, 1995). The following paper aims to analyze and bring to light written and drawn traces of childhood thought, that the journalist and writer Jella Lepman (1891-1970) collected in the late 1960s in various countries around the world. The analysis of sources, in addition to arousing significant historical interest, represents an elective opportunity to study problems and paradoxes of the condition of children and a valuable track of investigation to broaden the knowledge of childhood during the past century.

Da fine Ottocento in poi, l’infanzia è stata al centro di teorizzazioni e ricerche in diversi campi del sapere. Dopo numerosi studi e approfondimenti su e per i bambini, nel corso del XX secolo si è dischiusa la possibilità di esaminare la voce e il segno del bambino stesso, tenuti poco in considerazione prima di allora a causa della natura labile delle fonti e del loro carattere ibrido, segnato spesso dalla mano dell’adulto (Gecchele, Polenghi, Dal Toso, 2017). La sfida di analizzare e studiare i vissuti dei bambini nella storia è recente e molto articolata (Becchi, 1994, 1999, 2010; Fava, 2015): le “scritture bambine” ci offrono un'ampia panoramica in cui l'infanzia diviene la chiave per capire le trasformazioni della società, la sua mentalità, le sue convinzioni, il suo atteggiamento verso il futuro (Antonelli, Becchi, 1995). Il seguente contributo intende analizzare e riportare alla luce tracce scritte e disegnate del pensiero infantile che la giornalista e scrittrice Jella Lepman (1891-1970) ha raccolto alla fine degli anni Sessanta in diversi paesi del mondo. L’analisi delle fonti, oltre a suscitare un significativo interesse storico, rappresenta un’occasione elettiva per studiare problemi e paradossi della condizione bambina del periodo considerato e una preziosa pista di indagine per ampliare la conoscenza dell’infanzia del secolo passato.
