The article analyses the Western policy towards the Islamic republic of Iran and the differences amongst the US policy (based on the dual containment) and the European one (critical dialogue). It states that these different approaches are not only a ‘carrot and stick’ policy but reflect a different perception and different goals in their policy toward Tehran
