Starting from the examination of the frescoes in the Gothic Hall in the Basilica of SS. Quattro Coronati, we focus on the role played by the members of the Mendicant Orders in support of Gregory IX during the confrontation with Frederick II between 1238 and 1250. Of particular importance were the public religious manifestations, promoted or supported by the Mendicants with their preaching, and the diffusion of prophetic writings (or considered such) as well as propaganda pamphlets aimed at denigrating the adversary and discrediting him in the eyes of his supporters. In this intense work in the service of the Apostolic See, the role of the two holy founders of the Orders, Francis and Dominic, indicated as fundamental support for the Church at that dramatic juncture, gained great importance.

Abstract
Starting from the examination of the frescoes in the Gothic Hall in the Basilica of SS. Quattro Coronati, we focus on the role played by the members of the Mendicant Orders in support of Gregory IX during the confrontation with Frederick II between 1238 and 1250. Of particular importance were the public religious manifestations, promoted or supported by the Mendicants with their preaching, and the diffusion of prophetic writings (or considered such) as well as propaganda pamphlets aimed at denigrating the adversary and discrediting him in the eyes of his supporters. In this intense work in the service of the Apostolic See, the role of the two holy founders of the Orders, Francis and Dominic, indicated as fundamental support for the Church at that dramatic juncture, gained great importance.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
