The Italian school system is an example of full inclusion. The number of pupils who are not mainstreamed, but are in separated institutes in Italy is very little. This is due to the fact that Italy took a really radical step in 1977, approving an antidiscriminatory legislation known as integrazione scolastica, by which disabled student were mainstreamed and special schools were almost completely dismantled (they exist only for the very seriously disabled, such as the deaf-blind). How dis Italy take that revolutionary step? Is the school system really totally inclusive? We will try to answer to these questions, seeing why Italy took the decision of 1977 and showing what happened afterwards.
