In 1880, Émile Belot published a monograph on Pseudo-Xenophon’s Constitution of the Athenians, in which he took an unusual position: he interpreted the Constitution of the Athenians as a letter written by Xenophon to the Spartan King Agesilaus in 378 BC. To explain this interpretation, this paper introduces Belot as a researcher and a teacher; and then attempts to place him and his work in the context of the historical-philological studies of his time ; finally, it evaluates his methodological approach and his scholarly contributions.

Abstract
In 1880, Émile Belot published a monograph on Pseudo-Xenophon’s Constitution of the Athenians, in which he took an unusual position: he interpreted the Constitution of the Athenians as a letter written by Xenophon to the Spartan King Agesilaus in 378 BC. To explain this interpretation, this paper introduces Belot as a researcher and a teacher; and then attempts to place him and his work in the context of the historical-philological studies of his time ; finally, it evaluates his methodological approach and his scholarly contributions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
