This is an introduction to a volume of proceedings of a conference held at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal.The study meeting is the result of cooperation between Italian and German scholars and aims to highlight the peculiarities of a type of documentation that has so far been little studied, but is widely used for administrative and liturgical purposes, as well as for the conservation of literary works, maps and travel reports.
