In this chapter, we compare the responses of female and male university students using transit in four cities on four continents: Melbourne, Australia; Tokyo/Kanagawa, Japan; Milan, Italy; and Rio Claro, Brazil. We examine rates of self-reported sexual harassment and assault by gender, compare bystander responses, and measure the extent to which these experiences are reported to police and transit authorities.

Abstract

In this chapter, we compare the responses of female and male university students using transit in four cities on four continents: Melbourne, Australia; Tokyo/Kanagawa, Japan; Milan, Italy; and Rio Claro, Brazil. We examine rates of self-reported sexual harassment and assault by gender, compare bystander responses, and measure the extent to which these experiences are reported to police and transit authorities.
