“Nolebat quod prevaleret falsitas veritati”: I falsi, Innocenzo III e lo stilus curiae

The study of a jurisdictional case long debated both locally and in the papal curia between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries makes it possible to grasp the ways in which papal documents were falsified and the systems for recognizing forgeries and the authors of forgeries. In particular, a document in favour of the church of Paciliano (subject to the parish church of Casale Monferrato) attributed to Celestine III is carefully examined and, on the basis of internal and external elements, judged "false".

Lo studio di un caso giurisdizionale a lungo dibattuto sia in sede locale sia alla curia papale tra XII e XIII secolo consente di cogliere le modalità di falsificazioni dei documenti papali e i sistemi per riconoscere i falsi e i falsari. In particolare un documento in favore della chiesa di Paciliano (soggetta alla pieve di Casale Monferrato) attribuito a Celestino III viene attentamente esaminato e, sulla base di elementi interni ed esterni, giudicato "falso".
