The biographer is very interested in this topic, in the framework of which he highlights the stability of the Hellenic anti Persian alliance under the Athenian leadership. The tradition on which it is based is coherent and well informed, more attentive (like Aristoteles and Diodorus) to the role of individuals than Herodotus and Thucydides, indifferent to the contrast Athens / Sparta that is left in the background. This interest may reflect, in addition to the orientation of the sources used by Plutarch, also contemporary interests, linked on the one hand to the awakening of the Greek national conscience in the cultural context of the Second Sophistics, on the other to the campaigns of Trajan in Dacia and Parthia.
