Virtuous Texts: The Idea of Virtue in Poems by Pope, Gray and Goldsmith

This book esamine the way in which the concept of virtue is treated in ethic, literary and artistic contexts during the eighteenth century, with particular reference to the works of Pope, Gray and Goldsmith, and documents the growing awareness, on the part of writers, of a shift of collocation of literature from an élite to a mass dimension.

In questo volume viene esaminato il modo in cui il concetto di virtù si articola in ambiti etici, letterari e artistici durante il Settecento, e in particolare nelle opere di Pope, Gray e Gildsmith, e documenta la graduale presa di coscienza, da parte degli autori, di uno spostamento della letteratura da un ambito d’élite ad uno di massa.
