Text and critical commentary of Soph. frg. 941 Radt (from an unknown drama). § I: The epic models. The fragment begins with a list of attributes of Aphrodite, each introduced by the formula ἔστιν μὲν (δὲ), according to anaphoric forms typical of epic catalogs. Specifically, the underlying model here is Il. XIV 214 ff., with the list of spells in the magic girdle of Aphrodite. Even more clear are the correspondences that can be seen between vv. 8-12 and the opening words of the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite. More generally, the literary and stylistic analysis can confirm the attribution of this fragment to Sophocles. § II: Critical and exegetical notes to vv. 1-8. § III: Interpretation of vv. 9-17. One of the underlying models is here Empedocles. Noteworthy are also some points of contact with the hymn to Venus in the proem of Lucretius' De rerum natura (maybe these correspondences can be traced back to Empedocles himself, who is known to have been a source for Lucretius in this part of the poem). In verse 11 (νωμᾷ δ 'ἐν οἰωνοῖσι † τοὐκείνης † πτερόν) I propose to read νωμᾷ δ' ἐν οἰωνοῖσι τοὐκείνων πτερόν, " in birds she (Aphrodite) moves their wings." For the reference to the input of Aphrodite within the bodies of living beings and to her 'kinetic' ability, cf. esp. Lucr. I 12 s. and Ov. Fast. IV 94 (in a passage which was, in turn, influenced by Lucretius himself).

Edizione testo critico e commento di Soph. frg. 941 Radt di Sofocle, di dramma ignoto. § I: I modelli epici. Al v. 11 (νωμᾷ δ' ἐν οἰωνοῖσι † τοὐκείνης † πτερόν) propongo di leggere νωμᾷ δ' ἐν οἰωνοῖσι τοὐκείνων πτερόν: "negli uccelli she (Afrodite) muove la loro ala". Per il riferimento all'ingresso di Afrodite all'interno dei corpi dei viventi e alla sua capacità 'cinetica', cfr. in part. Lucr. I 12 s. e Ov. Fast. IV 94.
