This article introduces the project ‘Imagines et ornamenta Lunae. La scultura romana a Luni, materiali e contesti’, that started in collaboration with SABAP, Polo Museale, Museo Archeologico della Spezia, and aims to offer a complete study of the sculptures found in Luni and now exhibited in several Italian and foreign museums. In our opinion, Roman sculpture is a very useful medium for a better understanding of the economic and social dynamics of a community, because it conveys civic and political values. Moreover, Luni is an exemplary case to reconstruct the sculptural furniture of a Roman town. Discovery data are often available, and, given the presence of the Carrara marble quarries, Luni probably housed specialized workshops. So we can learn the economic interests linked to the quarries as well as the techniques and the new ideas that spread around them.
