L'Odissea del pittore di Penelope

This article focuses on two paintings by the Penelope Painter (working in the 5th century Athens), representing the adventures of Odysseus once he has come back to Ithaca, a theme almost unknown to vase-painting before this period. The analysis of the two scenes, compared with other literary and iconographic sources on the same subjects, shows that the painter was not strictly following the Homeric Odyssey, but rather he was influenced also by other mythical traditions.

Questo articolo si concentra su due pitture su vaso realizzate dal Pittore di Penelope (operante ad Atene nella metà del V secolo), che hanno come argomento le avventure di Odysseus dopo il suo ritorno a Itaca, tema precedentemente quasi ignorato dall’arte figurativa. L’analisi delle due scene, confrontate con altre fonti letterarie e iconografiche riguardanti gli stessi soggetti, mostra che il pittore non stava riprendendo strettamente l’Odissea di Omero, e suggerisce piuttosto che egli fosse influenzato anche da altre tradizioni mitiche.
