The paper aims to highlight the different way in which the Greek and the Armenian language conceptualizes the idea of nature. The Armenian words meaning 'nature' and 'natural' are Iranian loanwords — or their derivatives — that refer to the concept of 'basis' or 'root'. They seem to designate the fundamental and pristine way of being of a general/particular entity, its very basic core. This denotation is confirmed by the analysis of their use in some passages of the Armenian Bible in comparison with the Greek version.

Abstract

The paper aims to highlight the different way in which the Greek and the Armenian language conceptualizes the idea of nature. The Armenian words meaning 'nature' and 'natural' are Iranian loanwords — or their derivatives — that refer to the concept of 'basis' or 'root'. They seem to designate the fundamental and pristine way of being of a general/particular entity, its very basic core. This denotation is confirmed by the analysis of their use in some passages of the Armenian Bible in comparison with the Greek version.
