A brief classification of the main types of expressions that result from language contact is presented with attention to the influence of English on Italian. It is assumed that luxury loanwords are attractive because of their polyphonic aura. Polyphony is taken here to represent the echo of traditions, cultures and attitudes that are evoked by the use of a product of interference. As units of the Italian repertoire, loanwords are equipped at the emic level with a polyphonic charge that can be activated or defused, according to the concrete speech events in which they occur.

Abstract
A brief classification of the main types of expressions that result from language contact is presented with attention to the influence of English on Italian. It is assumed that luxury loanwords are attractive because of their polyphonic aura. Polyphony is taken here to represent the echo of traditions, cultures and attitudes that are evoked by the use of a product of interference. As units of the Italian repertoire, loanwords are equipped at the emic level with a polyphonic charge that can be activated or defused, according to the concrete speech events in which they occur.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
