A brief account of multilingualism in Italy is presented, and the various minority languages are considered together with the tendency to multilingualism that is characteristic for these communities. The particular status of the so-called Italian dialects is also taken into account and it is stated that they should be treated like local languages, with a peculiar design that is not to be reduced to that of an Italian variety.
