Terminology is a factor of social and economic development, which contributes to the dissemination of knowledge by enhancing deep relationships with their socioeconomic, technical and scientific evolutionary background. Our contribution takes advantage of past valuable experiences, in order to emphasize the importance of terminology as expression both of development and innovation, which supports the evaluation of the most significant traditions in the arts and crafts today. The analysis is applied to the case of tanning, to texts concerning this skill and to the study of terminology in the XVIIth-XIXth centuries in France and Italy. The diachronic perspective shows the evolution of technical and scientific knowledge of this craft which, thanks to encyclopedias, manuals, glossaries, explores its terminological documents which have been collected from language and culture life. The assessment of this terminological history becomes a relevant factor in promoting enterprises in this sector and in disseminating knowledge related to skills which have such a long tradition.

Abstract
The assessment of this terminological history becomes a relevant factor in promoting enterprises in this sector and in disseminating knowledge related to skills which have such a long tradition.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
